The image editing workspace has a focus around the use of Layers, which is great because this makes non-destructive editing an integral part of the software. These can work well, but they can also fail badly. These changes are very subtle but will really show their impact after we bring some contrast back using the curve panel.You also get AI-powered Quick Actions. This will also give the image a cold and warm diagonal split. I also want to bring out the warmer tones in the rock faces.
For this image, I decided I want to emphasize the soft colors in the sky while muting the greens in the mountains.
This panel is divided up into three categories: saturation, brightness, and hue, each with eight different color designated sliders. A great feature within this panel is you can move the mouse cursor up and down over any color in the image and it will adjust the corresponding sliders. Sometimes, I enjoy making super bright pastel versions that resemble some sort of poster that might have hung in a 60s doctor's office. A little change tends to go a long way but since this is all non-destructive, feel free to get a little weird. The Color EQ panel can be overwhelming for first-time users and the best way to learn how to use it is to just start playing with the sliders and see how they affect the image. For this image, I am going to get really creative in the Color EQ and Split Tone panels, so I just add a little warmth here. I encourage everyone to experiment with tones that make you uncomfortable. It took me many years before I warmed up to the idea of anything different. I personally lean toward cooler, more neutral tones. When it comes to landscapes, there is always room for either depending on the season and the mood you want the image to convey. Over the years working as a digital tech, I've learned individuals tend to lean one way or the other when it comes to choosing warmer or cooler tones in their edits. White balance is often a matter of personal taste.
