Some artists are not bothered by the curl and basically just rip off the foil layer without much problem, but for those who aren’t as talented there is a nice little hack. Probably the most frustrating thing about this technique is getting the foil layer off without too much curling. As with any tool, a basic familiarity is needed or you end up over cutting, creating ragged edges, etc.
Third, this requires use of an x-acto or craft knife. This makes the foil tricky to work with if you are not careful. Second, the foil layer is quite thin and tends to curl up quite a bit. In peeling the foil, you have to be careful not to bend, crease or tear the foil. I’m not entirely sure who was the first to use it, but certainly one of the first innovators I know of is an artist who goes by “bigup.” Bigup has been refining this technique and combining it with other techniques to create some truly stunning works. This technique has been around for a while now. In the world of altered cards, the foil peel technique seems to be on the upswing.
